I just have to ask, in what way do you find the interface primitive?

It has everything you need to see in game, when you need to see it. and doesnt take up too much screenspace (unless you run low resolution+large interface size of course).

He's a hardcore PvP player though! Well he says he is, but I reckon he's just one of those on-line players who demands everything to be easily laid out in front of them.

You know the type, they just can't be arsed to learn anything new.

To answer what the OP was commenting on:

The interface is somewhat cumbersome for Healers. It's definitely optimized for keyboard shortcut healing versus UI mouse-clicking methods.

Knowing the Party Member number when healing is a necessity it appears so that heals can be sent more efficiently.

For the record, I have never actively played a healer in Guild Wars, in other games yes <DAoC, WoW, Horizons> so my statement is just a semi-educated guess.

Wow this thread is full of some whiney little fanboys. Just because someone asks about the features of this game in comparison to other online games is not a reason to start getting your panties all bunched up because you think GULID WARS SI TEH BEST GAEM EVA.

Just answer the man's question or run along, children.

Hey, everyone, he has legit concerns. If you're just healing, the default settings can really suck. The enchants and status bars are too far away from the party window, your skills and recharge times are further still, and the compass is who-knows-where. It's spread out, which looks pretty, but in terms of pure efficient healing it's often not too great...

You can rebind and change all aspects of the interface. Just go into your options menu and start playing around with stuff, you can make any window as large or small as you want, put the effects where you want them, everything.

Personally (I mainly heal as well), I found it was much easier to begin by rebinding the keys. I have a split keyboard (ergonomic), so my 6, 7, and 8 keys are on my RIGHT hand...and that's a problem. I rebound them to R, F, and V and find that even on standard keyboards it's easier to hit the skills I need when I need them. It sucked getting used to it, but now it's much easier.

In terms of moving your bars around, there are many things that you can do. I found that it was best to move my party screen to the lower-right and my compass to the lower-left. My chat goes into the upper-left (I don't have much time to talk to people during PvP), and I have all personal conditions and enchantments directly above my skills (which are still in the center bottom). My target and target's skill use is at the top center as usual, because when I'm healing I don't often care to see what my enemies are using.

My setup allows me to see my information that I need best, and to quicken things up as much as possible on my end of everything. It works for me, you just need to find out what works for you.

-------

In terms of "This isn't like WoW!", well, it's not. There are no UIs that auto-debug people, there are no auto-targetters, no macros, nothing like that. The interface isn't designed to do things for you; rather, it is designed so that you can figure out how you want to do things. I would suggest playing for a while, trying to get used to controls and stuff (when I came off of WoW, I'd have a horrid time with that darn Space Bar causing me to attack rather than jump, as dumb as it sounds). If you get frustrated 'cause something is too far away, only then should you go and change the menu bars to suit your needs.

There are only a few things that people really need, and that's a method to coordinate attacks on a single target (in other games, UI options showed you what the tank was attacking, etc). GW has that in the calling and targetting system. Also, an efficient way to share builds was necessary; the recent addition of templates certainly covers that area.

It would be nice to just hit one button and automatically choose a target, choose the correct spell, and cast it on them. It would destroy all PvP, though, because it takes all human components out of the system. Good players are good not because of their epic gear or macro systems; they're good because of their talent at the game, obtained through practice -- not a download.

Hope I helped a little bit, or at least explained some things.

(SHORT ANSWER: No, there are no downloadable UI changes, but you can fully customize all keybindings and interface windows through the Options menu)

Additionally, mods have to be "regulated" and policed, something ANet can't afford to do.

And, lastly, after playing WoW for 2 years, I was a heavy mod user: I had mods that would target the enemy with the lowest health that was casting, I had mods that would apply the most efficient heal when I clicked the health bar of the target. The point is some mods made gameplay way too easy and made for an uneven playing field.

Keeping your mods up to date was a game in and of itself and a royal pain. Running 120+ mods that you had to change or update each major patch kinda sucked, but once you started using mods, you are hooked.

ANet's game philosophy is simple:

Play the game and have confidence that every one else is playing the same game along with you.
all i used was gypsy unit bars, titan panel, mini group mod, stun watch, stancesets and like telo's clock and ct raid before blizzard added its own raid bars, nothing that altered gameplay, i was a warrior, so i never had to worry about decurse etc

i never dabbled into anything else as it got too clumsy and it would just increase the annoyance of updating after patching

i needed gypsy and mini group window because i'm a clicker so all my action bars were used via the mouse...so i had to be able to see my enemies, my parties and my own health bars near to the action bars so my eyes didnt have to wander to the top of the screen to get the info i needed

like the above poster said, the main complaint i have is if your a healer, it just looks like it goes out of its way to hinder you
